Sony pegs Android 4.4.2 KitKat for Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z for May 2014

Xperia KitKat May 2014A month ago Sony confirmed that the older Xperia Z devices would be updated to Android 4.4.2 KitKat during the middle of Q2 i.e. May 2014. Well to show that there has been no change to that schedule so far, Sony has updated its product pages for the Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Xperia Tablet Z. It pegs the release date explicitly as May 2014 for these handsets, meaning that we could start to see KitKat rolling in a months’ time (being naturally conservative, we assume the release will take place towards the end, rather than the beginning of the month). We’ll bring you any further news as we have it.

Well a new build number has just been certified for the Xperia Z, ZL and Tablet Z in the form of 10.5.A.0.230.

As suggested in the small step-up in version number, this is likely to fix bugs found in the previous version. Xperia Z2Sony Japan announced the Xperia Z2 (SO-03F) and Xperia Z2 Tablet (SO-05F) for NTT DoCoMo earlier today, along with the Xperia A2 (SO-04F). From what we can tell, the Xperia Z2 (SO-03F) is the same as the global version but comes with 32GB of internal storage as standard (global model has 16GB). There is also support for Full-Seg, although this is via an adaptor rather than being built into the handset. The Xperia Z2 (SO-03F) has no infra-red support.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet (SO-05F) is an LTE model with 32GB of internal storage. DoCoMo plans to launch the Xperia Z2 on 21 May 2014, with black , purple and white colours available. The Xperia Z2 Tablet is scheduled for launch at the end of June 2014 in black and white colours.

Either way, it looks like Sony is trying to forge a relationship with Verizon and this may be one of the first Sony Xperia products arriving on Verizon for a long time (the last being the Xperia PLAY).
